Progress of the Walled Garden – Our grand project
Having found our beautiful, but rather sad, old walled garden, we have worked incredibly hard to bring it back to life.
The garden is 4 acres but is split in two by part of the old wall. In our first year of the project we have built a compost area, re-fitted a polly tunnel to turn it into a green house, and cleared the top 2 acres of weeds. We have started to put in pathways and planted our perennials, with many of our shrubs acting as wind breaks. We use pieces of slate that we find in the garden to start the long path next to our Hydrangeas, nearly complete now.
We have started a new pathway to the elegant old gate. A lovely feature of the garden.
We have worked in deep mud, torrents of rain!, snow, wind and shine..... with many days of gorgeous sunshine. Friends, family, dogs and pheasants have all helped along the way.
It is amazing how much we have learnt this year, our growing has been fantastic and we have made many new friends and contacts to help us along the way (Oct 2008 to 2009).
Certainly, Spring 2010 will be a great challenge as we begin our work into the lower two acres, always the most spectacular part of the garden.... but the least tended. Filling this part of the garden will make the dream come true.... much like an old dilapidated house that you gradually renovate.... we hope to see all of our garden reach its full beautiful potential.
Volunteers welcome!
